I appreciate why giving up may sometimes be an easy way out since you won’t have to admit defeat to anyone. It’s just that giving up makes me feel I haven’t got the tenacity to keep my vision in sight. What is the point if I can’t keep the one thing I’m passionate about foremost in my mind? It doesn’t sit well with me.
It’s my job to infuse myself with enough conviction so I can see it through till the end? How it turns out when I’ve done my best is out of my control. All I know is when I tackle the next challenge; I will do better.
I honestly do believe the best is yet to come.
Think about it.
If you’re serious about leaving a small dent in the universe, or you’re committed to make the world a better place through your efforts. Then you are the type of person who’s learning every day, keeping physically fit, striving towards your goals, nurturing strong relationships and smelling the roses by experiencing the world.
It’s impossible to be doing these things and not growing. I’m not saying that sometimes you don’t feel down, and you doubt your capabilities. Sometimes things just aren’t materialising the way you would like. But even if the progress is at a snail’s pace, you are still progressing.
Never stop. Keep going. You haven’t topped out just yet. When I succeed, the next day, I go back to writing. And when I fail, I go back to writing.
Why do I do this?
I do it because it’s one of my fundamental beliefs.
I believe I always have more to give.Â
I’m mature enough to understand that what we intend to achieve may not be realised in the form we might expect. But that’s life. Whatever the result, I know I can do better. As Dr Carol Dweck proposes in her bestselling book Mindset, you need a growth mindset to believe you can do better.
Your best work always lies ahead. It may be years down the road or just around the next bend. You’ll never know when you’ll do it, but rest assured, it’s nothing you’ve done before.
If you’re an entrepreneur, inside you is a business idea that will benefit consumers. If you’re a painter, your next stroke might be the beginning of a masterpiece. And if you’re a writer like me, then theirs a bestseller on the horizon that will entertain and enlighten new readers.
Don’t give up before the curtain falls. Your ultimate story has not been written, and as long as you’re breathing, what comes next will be your best yet.Â
