We can’t avoid it. Those days will come.
They always do.
But what we can do is learn to appreciate the winters as a time of growth.
Think about winters in your past that you were forced to persevere. You can do it again but this time, let’s prepare for it. Life will always have its winters, and we should be able to use it to become even stronger. No matter what season you face, there is always an opportunity to grow. Some of us are just emerging from a winter - COVID-19, unlike anything many of us have ever experienced.
What did we learn from it?
Two things I learned from this pandemic is:
- There are some things we have no control over, and we can only accept. Everything else is within our purview.
- I may have thought it dumb initially, but my immigrant parents prepared me well for situations like this.
For my parents living in the UK was one long winter. With the skills they grew up with in Jamaica and their pessimistic nature, it seemed as if they were constantly preparing for a hurricane — and some of that rubbed off on me. I still moan and groan when the winters are approaching, but I recover quickly and buckle down.
Jim Rohn suggests we use the winter season, or any season for that matter, to do these three things, and I agree.
- Get Stronger
- Get Wiser
- Get Better
The writing lifestyle is ideal for this. I have hunkered down many times when things are going badly for me and focus on those three essentials I mentioned above. I write a lot more, concentrate on my physical well-being and what I’m eating, read a lot more, make plans, and modify my goals while I bide my time. Not only are these times super productive, the static of modern living that’s all around seems to dim, and self-reflection becomes
a priority. So, all in all, I need to be ready when my fortunes change.
Bad times come, and bad times go. As difficult as these periods are, our only duty is to emerge from them stronger, wiser, and better, no matter what.
