When I first heard those words, I didn’t appreciate their significance. I didn’t understand I was given the keys to the kingdom. The way for me to acquire my dreams if they meant as much to me as I professed.

I held onto the idea that my present condition - give or take a few extra grey hairs, would be relatively the same for my future self. That sad state of affairs is called a Fixed Mindset, and it’s poison for anyone who wants to achieve more and go further.

What millions of other people and I didn’t realize at the time is that you need to make decisions today that will impress upon your future self in 20 years. A decision that will resonate with your tribe for 20 years hence. The key is to be aware of your choices in the now and think about where they are leading you.

That can be easier said than done and may require some soul searching, but it’s worth it. You need to be very clear on the future you want to create. Now I’m ‘woke’ to the idea of future self-development, I can make some moves now that will position me well in the future. I’m looking at making improvements to my life today that will be advantageous down the road. No one knows precisely how the future will turn out but think about what tools and resources you’d like to have at your disposal ten years hence and start preparing now. Start focusing on what behaviors you need to change to achieve the level of success and calm.

If you’re making smart decisions, this moment is based on where you want to be, and if you’re continually learning and improving yourself, you’ll be satisfied with your results.
