Years later, the experience taught me being invincible isn’t about being the smartest person in the room. It’s not even about winning consistently - you know my opinion on that subject, failure teaches you more than success. It’s not even about being the strongest or the fastest.
Becoming invincible is about people who focus on what’s in front of them, their goals, purpose, and family. Instead of being distracted by everything around them.
Most people complain about not having enough time. My take is if it’s important enough, you will find the time. I couldn’t let an excuse like that stop me from writing. If I wanted to use the power of focus in my life, I had to get on with it.
I’ve never had the privilege of being a full-time writer. I think because of this, I developed the ability to focus whenever and wherever I could snatch a moment. So much so, it’s become second nature for me. It’s much easier now with the technology available than when I started writing in the ’90s. We have no excuses in today’s world not to give our focus to the things we love. The superpower of focus can be yours if you require
it.
My solution to writing between the cracks, as I call it, is to use any available moment throughout the day to be creative. It can be ten minutes, five minutes, or even just two minutes of focused work to capture a thought on my phone or in my notebook. One thing that is on a continuous loop in my head is the current story that I’m working on. Characters come and go, scenes are created and discarded, the plot is constructed and
deconstructed. Mindless tasks are beneficial too - washing the dishes has helped me resolve many a story issue. Focusing on my writing has made me more productive than I could have imagined.
Focus isn’t about the quantity of time; it’s about the quality of time. One hour of consistent, focused work over time will astound you. You could:
- Write a book
- Complete an oil painting
- Write a song
- Learn a language
- Learn to bake
- Keep Fit
Being invincible and performing meaningful work is about having focus in a distracted world. Recognizing your superpower can be sucked from you if you don’t protect it with your life is essential. The temptation to be caught up in the excesses of consumption are strong. Equally strong should be your commitment to staying focused because you’ll be amazed at what can be achieved.
