I can’t be the best version of myself as a writer, and you can’t be the best in whatever is important to you, if you don’t know yourself. To truly know yourself is much more than a skill; it’s a quest you must embark on. If you’re lucky or blessed, there will come a time when you’ve had enough of playing the role everyone else wants you to play.
Your true self wants to come out.
Be thankful this is happening.
It will change your life.

Have the Courage to be Yourself!

When you know who you are, you know what you need to do, instead of looking for others’ permission. It allows you to bypass tons of frustration caused by putting time into the wrong things. Yes, life is supposed to be full of trial and error, but this lets you find the best areas for you to experiment in the first place. Once you know yourself, you will become more confident, understand your purpose, and begin making a bigger impact on the world.

When we’re aligned to our true self, life is beautiful, and we’re in a state of flow. We’re connected to our purpose, and we attract people and opportunities that allow us to express ourselves and reach our fullest potential. I don’t know what it is, but the connection with the world around you is deeper when you allow your authentic self out. It’s that child-like nature that is part and parcel of your true self. So many of us have lost that.

I cringe when I think back on how I wanted to please everyone else except myself. How I allowed others to dictate what I did and didn’t do. When I think about it, I was being pushed around like a nerd in a bar fight. I can laugh now but recounting how gullible I was because of my lack of self-knowledge makes me sad.

I remember I had an awesome comic collection when I was growing up. Mainly Marvel comics but some DC stuff too. In Jamaica, my friend Colin Spence and I saw ourselves as budding comic artists and collectors. We were committed as youngsters, and even up to graduating from high school, we remained enthusiastic. Eventually, though, I got worn down by all the societal expectations demanding what I should be focussed on, what was important. I buckled and gave away my precious comics. It was my passion, and I let my friends, parents, and concerned adults push me away from it. I was young but this was one of my first lesson in not knowing who I was.

A large part of my life was spent being pushed.
Pushed by people’s opinions of me.
Pushed by social pressures.
Pushed by cultural and religious expectations.
Pushed by a false desire to belong.

I’ve been choosing to decide for myself for many years.
Deciding to use my intuition and inspiration.
Deciding love, compassion, and generosity are important.
Deciding my creativity and imagination is a tool for growth.
Deciding my dreams can make a difference in the world.

Gentle reader let’s make a promise to ourselves. Let’s surrender to the lure of our true self, as uncomfortable as that may be. Listen to our emotions. Especially those that we were taught we “shouldn’t” be experiencing.
Take the opportunity to find what you are made of, and therefore who you are. It will be time well spent.
