A lucky few know their life purpose from an early age.
I always knew I wanted to be a writer, but I didn’t have any guidance. I faltered, thinking I wasn’t good enough to be a published author. But my North Star saved me from a life of mediocrity, and step by step pointed me to where I am now.
Â
Many of us know what our North Star is, but we either take it for granted or let others tell us what our purpose should be. The challenge with not having a purpose is that even if you choose to go in a particular direction, you won’t have any way to know if it was the right choice or not.
I was lucky.
Â
So, how do you find your purpose if you don’t already know it?
The answer is action.
You need to get out into the world and do stuff. Gain wide and varied experience. Try new things.
Â
I would keep three things in mind when constructing my life purpose.
- Explore Your Curiosity - What truly interests you? What do you check out on YouTube or online every opportunity you get? What energises you? What ignites your fire? What can you talk about for hours and hours while losing track of time?
- Expressing Your Curiosity - Have you discovered something that you would commit weeks, months, or years of your life? Something that when it gets difficult, you will stick with it. Something you think about doing even when you’re doing something else.
- What is the end game? Do you want to add value to others without expecting anything in return? Is it money to travel, relax, or support your family? Is it to make beautiful art? Or is it to put a dent in the universe and become a legendary contributor to humanity?
Once you have these three points in mind, your North Star will be high above you, guiding your actions.Â
Â
From my experience as a writer, moulding my life purpose into precisely what I want, continues to be no easy task. But I know what I signed up for. I wanted to be able to express my unique stories and entertain a massive worldwide audience. That’s where I’m heading.
Â
So work hard but be sensible. Believing It will be a piece of cake is counterproductive. You will need to have faith, persistence, a rational mind, a willingness to commit, the right timing, and proper conditions. In the meantime, do what you must. Don’t await the perfect storm. You may not be able to make your life purpose your job, but you can use your job to support your life purpose. And for me that is a win, win.
