Every Level of Life Will Demand a Different You.

It takes much more than pure talent to get your life to the next level. That’s why so many people never try. They never evolve. They never give up who they are for who they could become. Instead, they continue to live the same stagnant, mediocre, and boring lives. Although moving to the next level is scary - remember you are stepping out of your comfort zone; the benefits are enormous.

Take it to the Next Level.

I remember years ago, my dad, who was an old school Jamaican fisherman, who used canoes, nets, and fish traps like his ancestors in Africa, introduced me to Hermit Crabs. One of the many interesting things my dad told me about hermit crabs is their shells. These little “mobile homes” are vital for them; they protect their soft abdomens and are crucial to their survival. The perfect shell allows them complete mobility and keeps them safe from predators. The thing with Hermit Crabs is they are growing, and their shells that remain the same are becoming uncomfortable and restrictive.

Crabs regard living in a shell that is too small for them as unacceptable and will actively seek out a new shell to carry around with them. While we humans will outgrow our shells - which are the tired ideas that no longer serve us but carry them around with us nonetheless. We resign to our situation, accept our circumstances, especially if they’re not life-threatening and never grow.

That’s a mistake.

So what is it like on that new level?

At first, it’s scary. Remember, you’ve ditched that tired ass story you’ve been telling yourself about who you are and what you can achieve. You’ve given up your past. You’ve let go of your need to predict the outcome in order to embrace a bigger future.
And as a result, your subconscious will immediately want to drag you back to what you were before. It will try to tell you that you’ve taken a wrong turn and need to go back.

As Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. said,

“A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions.”

Your old life isn’t actually there for you anymore. You can never go back to how things once were; you’ve seen and experienced things that have made you a fundamentally different person.

Just like when we as people realised the sun did not revolve around the earth, but the other way around, you’ve begun to see the world from a different perspective.
Your paradigm has shifted. You’ve evolved. You’re no longer thinking or playing so small.

Everything seems to click.

You start seeing opportunities everywhere.

The opinions of others don’t phase you.

You gain more confidence.

Then You Get stuck.

All the routines, strategies, and processes that worked in the past no longer do so. You start to question everything you’re doing and begin to wonder if this is what you really want.

You’re forced to either reinvent yourself or stay stuck.

To reinvent yourself demands, you becoming a student. As a student, you will seek understanding and take action. Once you learn and adapt, you’ll likely become complacent. That’s when you need to become a student again. And so the cycle continues. Just remember with that attitude, you’ll never get stuck or stagnate.

Your potential isn’t fixed, it’s limitless. However, it’s you who determines how far you go. Not your genetics and not society. You decide how you will respond to each stage of life you are at. How you respond will determine the next stage and the next. Embrace and accept the challenges, get a new and bigger shell, and watch how your life sparkles.
