You’ve got to work hard to succeed is a mantra many people around the world ascribe to. Hard physical work, for some, is like a puritanical standard they work towards, an important virtue. We applaud CEO’s who can leave their ivory towers, roll up their sleeves and chip in. We admire prolific writers who can churn out five or more full-length novels a year.

My Secret is Simple, Work Smart not Hard

We worry about whether our children are becoming hardworking or succumbing to laziness. God forbid if you have found a way to half the time it takes to do a particular task. The traditionalists would feel hard done. You are expected to work hard, goddamn it!
And that’s my worry.

Working hard is not necessarily a bad thing. My issue with the idea is that most of the time, there are more efficient ways to do the job we are struggling to accomplish. Over the centuries, enlightened seekers have looked for and found better and more productive ways for us to achieve our highest ideals. It’s not my job to reinvent the wheel. I’m looking for ways to achieve my goals more efficiently, and I’m not afraid to call on the pioneers who found the solution to these pressing issues for help.

When it comes to the important things in our lives, a smarter approach to our actions saves us energy and effort. From cooking to exercising to writing a book. I didn’t want to use all of my energy to work harder and have no energy left to learn how to work smart.
So I did something about it.

We get so caught up in working hard, we have no time to reflect on what we are doing. We’re trapped by the current. Battered and disorientated, we swirl around with no control. What we are missing is a space to play, for creative activity, reflection, and calm. The things that provide the balance to a frantic life.

Efficiency is not about doing as much as possible as fast as possible, but finding ways to do the essentials more effectively.

What I’ve learned about working smart as an author is how important it is to not just be involved in the cut and thrust of writing the story, creating the covers, marketing the book, and launching the final product. You need time to reflect and study. You need time to make sure your systems are efficient and effective. Small improvements in how you perform will have an exponential effect on your results. And that’s why taking the time to reflect on your work and how to do it better pays big dividends. When we step back and reflect, we find a new approach to time, work, and money, allowing ourselves the freedom to master these forces rather than be mastered by them.

I can see the benefits of working smart from the results of my books. They have more heart and impact when created from a position of ease and playfulness. I’m still working hard, that will always be the case, but I’m beginning to understand that it’s just as important to work smart.
