Earlier I talked about creating the type of art that has an impact. And for it to have an impact, it’s going to affect people in different ways. This is what every artist dreams of. Having an effect on their audience - good or bad. Being ignored is the worst position an artist can find themselves in. Now, once you understand that whatever you create must have an impact prepare for criticism or hate.
When hate rears its ugly head, you have to lock it down immediately by ignoring the comment.
Â
Constructive criticism, on the other hand, must be dealt with differently.
Â
Step back and chill - your first reaction to criticism might not be your best reaction. Take a moment to absorb the tone and content and consider your response.
Â
Remind yourself that feedback makes you better in the long run! And even if your critic doesn’t realize it, they are helping to improve your craft.
Â
Thank them for the feedback.
Â
And if you get the opportunity, ask questions. Probe a little deeper into why your critic thinks the way they do.
Â
Life has a way of providing us with tools for our growth if we are willing to use them. Sometimes they’re obvious and merely useful. Other times they’re difficult to see but life-changing. Call me audacious, call me presumptuous, or call me downright stubborn, but critics can only contribute to my Success. Writing is my thing, and there’s nothing anybody can do to stop me. If I can convince you to stop and criticise my work, I’m doing something
right.
So decide: Will you keep moving, or will you stop and listen to everything everyone has to say?
It’s an important choice to make. Choose wisely.
