I know you shouldn’t regret how you’ve lived your life because the past is past, and you only have your present to work with if you want your future to be better. I had a period in my life about fifteen years ago that I was very unproductive as a writer. I had lost my fire after being knockback by publishers I’d worked with before, I didn’t know where I was going, couldn’t see how I would progress as a writer. It was an uncertain time. Years after, when I looked back at it, I’d grimace about the time wasted never to return and how I was falling behind because of it. When I figured out my path, and I knew what direction I wanted my life to take. I began to look at that period differently.

Even when you M****F****want to kill me I still believe in heroes.

What if it was a part of my process? A step I had to take, an experience I had to go through so I could be where I am now.
Sometimes that novel is not ready to be written because you haven’t met the inspiration for your main character yet. Sometimes you need two more years of life experience before you can write a masterpiece that will feel real and true and raw to other readers. You’re not falling behind gentle reader; you’re just participating in a thing they call living.

I’m a late bloomer, like many of us, and I’m proud of it. We know what it’s like to be the underdog, the ugly duckling, the one who never seemed like they’d get their shit together. Our journeys took the scenic route as we meandered and redirected our course. Personally, I had a spark of possibility when I was a teenager, but it never quite became a flame. But now look at us. We’re starting to get there. We know what we want, and we’re figuring out how to get it. And we’re not alone.

Samuel L. Jackson made his meteoric rise as a superstar Hollywood actor, Late in life.
Jackson had a background in social activism before turning to acting in the 1970's and 1980's, mostly getting small roles in theatre and in movies. His career started blowing up when he worked with Spike Lee, first in “School Daze” and then “Do the Right Thing.”
In 1991, when he was 43, Jackson got serious critical attention for playing “Gator” in Lee’s “Jungle Fever” using his own drug addiction experiences as inspiration. He then leapt to the A-list with “Pulp Fiction” in 1994.

Jackson’s experience is a lesson in how life can take us on many different journeys until we find our passion and what we were meant to do. But once you find that magic spark hang on to it tightly, and trust in it.

We cheat ourselves when we buy into the lies we are sold about what success should look like, how long it should take, and by what ‘age’ it should be achieved.

Allow yourself the freedom to blossom in your own unique way, no matter how old and experienced you are. You’re not falling behind. You’re just taking the scenic route, discovering and aligning yourself with your purpose.

Knowing what I know now, why did I ever want to peak at 18 anyway?
