A Candle Loses Nothing by Lighting Another Candle.
Father James Keller
I’m not proud to say, but I’m from the old school selfish knowledge hoarders era. Back then, it was the way of looking at the world that was commonplace. Growing up in Jamaica, it was a common belief that if you acquired your skill through hard work and dedication,
you would never share that knowledge for free. You would want the seeker to go through the hardships you had to endure. It wasn’t easy for you, why make it easy for them. It made sense at the time. We would justify our meanness with platitudes about hardship and how it makes you stronger and the merits of adversity.
Want to Live forever punk! Share Your Knowledge.
I’ve come to realize I was wrong. You should share your knowledge. I haven’t stopped believing in growing stronger through hardship, I’ve amended the idea. Sharing our knowledge will give the recipients an advantage, and that is great, but it won’t insulate them from challenges. They will just be faced with a different set of challenges.
I’m glad I admitted I was wrong.
It’s a view of the world that kills dreams, holds people back, lacks humanity, and forces you to your grave without leaving a legacy behind.
But how can sharing your knowledge make a difference?
Ask that question to someone who wants to be in the position you find yourself in now. They aspire to be you. Do you remember what it felt like looking up to your favorite footballer, musician, author, or mentor? You clung to their every word. They could be the difference between a youngster reaching their goals and making a mark in the world. Or giving up and never fulfilling their true potential.
That’s how important sharing your knowledge is, and the payoff to yourself can be just as impressive. You will be talked about, your message spread, and others will want to be a part of that message. This is how you create opportunities in your own life by sharing what you know, not keeping it for yourself.
Hoarding your knowledge is hiding your brilliance and blocking the potential of lucrative offers coming your way.
Something else I learned about sharing knowledge is what you know is not where the value lies - the information you have is readily accessible. The knowledge itself is not unique. Other writers will have similar information to pass on to their students as I do. And with all this knowledge at our fingertips, 90% of people will do nothing with it. So what makes your knowledge special?
Your application.
How you’ve applied your knowledge to get the results you’re enjoying. How you do things is like a fingerprint that is unique to you and can be taught. That is where the value exists. If they can model your process, then they can get your results.
That’s why giving away your knowledge is not only the right thing to do but the smart thing to do. If your information has value in the marketplace, then money and recognition will beat a path to your door.
But more importantly, you have come on this Earth plane and left a legacy that will be used to make the world a better place. Personally, that’s what it’s all about.repeat itself.
Peace
