How Come You Know So Much but Do So Little?

The other day, I bumped into a friend I hadn’t seen in about five years. Before we lost contact, he was just about to begin his’ great adventure’ with a reputable network marketing company he was planning to join. My friend is bright and to my mind, a natural salesman. He was an extrovert, well-liked and could think on his feet. He talked a good game and if anyone could make a positive dent in the world, he could.
Our conversation after not seeing each other for a while was about friends and family, then I asked. .

Me - How did the plans turn out with that MLM company? When I saw you last, you were so excited. You must be somewhere at the top of their organizational chart by now.

Friend (shrugging) - I didn’t bother. Another opportunity came up, and since the last time I saw you, I’ve experimented with some stuff. It took some time, but I think I found the right vehicle just a week ago.

Me - Great(hiding my surprise)

Friend - How about you still writing?

Me - Still writing. More books, more fans and enjoying every minute, even the crappy bits.

Friend - Well done. You said you’d stick with it. You’re lucky you found what you wanted to do for the rest of your life. I just found my purpose.

And with his trademark enthusiasm, he excitedly told me about his new opportunity with the same level of intensity he displayed five years ago.

When we parted ways, promising to do a better job of staying in contact next time, I started thinking.
Did I have the promise of much but delivered very little? It got me scared because it could easily be me. Why do people who know the most do the least? Why do they fail to convert this knowledge into action? And why ’isn’t their everyday life any better with this knowledge than without it? I’m no better than you. I’m mainly writing this for us. A cautionary tale that will prevent us from landing in that situation. We all are fighting against the resistance and its tricks to slow you down and eventually stop you from taking action. But it’s no excuse to do nothing because all around we see other people with less talent making strides. They don’t talk much, keep their heads down, do the work, and follow the process without the overconcentration on the results. Because they’ve learned the results will come. So our “less smart” peers move forward much faster and enjoy life much fuller than we do.
We should learn from them.

My mom used to say, That knowing and doing are two different things. Once you are made aware of it, we shouldn’t be worried about knowing much and doing little. But be careful. It’s sneaky and will creep up on you when you least expect it. Just keep these five things in mind you’ll be fine:

Accept your present situation. This is where you will be working from for some time.
Take action, no matter how small.
Forget about the results, just work to get better.
Focus on doing the necessary work, whether you like it or not. The discipline is important
Realize that massive breakthroughs will happen unexpectedly, just keep grinding.

There’s a difference between knowing the path and walking the path.
