Have you ever completely lost yourself in a task, so that the world around you disappears? You lose track of time and are completely caught up in what you’re doing.
Your in the zone.
Across a wide range of disciplines from athletes to chess players, they all have found themselves in a state where they are immersed entirely on a task at hand.
That’s the popular concept of Flow, and it’s an essential ingredient for doing work and loving what you do. It’s in this state that we do our best, most efficient work and I am thankful it is a part of my writing process.
How Does it Feel to be in the Flow?
1. Completely involved in what you are doing - focused, concentrated.
2. A sense of Ecstasy - of being outside of everyday reality
3. Great Inner Clarity - Knowing what needs to be done.
4. Knowing the
activity is doable.
5. A sense of serenity - no worries about oneself or what is going on around you
6. Timelessness - thoroughly focused on the present, hours seem to pass by in moments.
7. Motivation - whatever produces flow becomes its own reward
You are most likely
to enter a state of flow when you're faced with a task that requires both a high level of skill and offers you a challenge. Don't run from it. Embrace it.
