Accept no ones Definition of Your Life, Define Yourself — anonymous
I learned something profound the other day. It was a concept I was familiar with but did not take on board.
When the student is ready, the master will appear, they say. The idea is a simple one but don't be fooled, it's powerful. Definition - The science of clarity in every part of your
life. You need to define what you want and who you want to be in loving detail. When you’re passing through space and time without having a clear idea of what you can become, its like you see yourself as a blurry sketch on someones else's easel. You have no defined edges or tangible consistency; you're like the majority of people, ghosts. So I’ve come to understand definition as knowing exactly where your going and exactly what your about. The personal development gurus back in the day would
remind you that if you don’t know where your going, how will you know when you’ve arrived.
Wake up and Know Define your Life
To understand what you’re about and what you’d want in your life you’ve got to state it in detail. And I don’t mean a nebulous set of ideas in your head where items get forgotten or misrepresented. Defining yourself needs something a bit more permanent than just your memory and a bit more commitment than a few random thoughts on the treadmill.
Like my
process of creating speculative fiction you need to create a roadmap. I start by knowing where my story will end. That gives me the opportunity to develop the middle with all the twists and turns a good story requires. What are the end results you want for yourself? What areas of life are important to you? Family, Career, Health, Finances, Personal Development, Community, Contribution, Spirit, What?
My advice when choosing, consider the right balance. When you know what areas are crucial to you, then take some time out with a pen and notebook and start constructing the person you want to be in these areas. Go into detail and make it come
from the heart. It may take a few hours, a day or a week, the time frame is immaterial. The point is you will leave this exercise with a blueprint of who you can be, who you have the capability to become. Knowing this you are able to navigate your world to such a degree that all your efforts are not squandered on actions that have no benefit to who you want to become. Everything you do is focused on the person you have defined. The only question you need to ask yourself is, Am I brave enough?
It takes a certain amount of faith to set standards for yourself and strive to live up to them no matter what the world says. Am I brave enough, to stand up and do what I must? That question, only you can answer.
Hope this Helps
Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert s an inspirational book on
creating magic in your life through creativity. Why I'm recommending Big Magic besides it being the most eloquent personal experience of the creative process I've read, its all about the fantastic questions, Elizabeth asks herself. And the question I want to ask you again, Are You Brave Enough? This book helps you to answer
that.
