In my case, I needed something I could call my own. Writing genre fiction wasn't a new thing, but I wanted an aspect of it, that allowed me to have a creative lane to myself. That's why Urban Fantastic was born and with it a little niche that only a few authors occupy in the UK. It wasn't brains either, just dumb luck and preparation. I was a crazy fan off genre fiction, grew up in Jamaica, resident in London, I would definitely have an original
take on any speculative fiction that was so far dominated by a European male aesthetic. It may not have been the best choice for me The sensible marketing gurus could tell me that I need to provide what the Market Mind requires. If it wants werewolves, then I need to write about werewolves. Give it what it wants. It makes perfect business sense.
I'm sure it does, it just feels a bit too cynical for my taste
I do want readers, I want to be successful, and I want the
opportunity to improve the life stories of my readers through my stories, but I have to do it my way no matter what the Market Mind says.
I have to keep my originality by remixing ideas and fostering that streak of rebellion. I do it in my writing. How do you do it?
Choose a part of your life that you want to share with the world. Be yourself and use the elements of your personality to forge something that is uniquely you, then give it away. For me it's books. What is it for
you?
Your Challenge
Your ego is telling you that this is stupid but don't listen. Create something unique and share it. Your ambition may not be to change the world but you will impact it in a way only you can.
