An inheritance is what you Leave with people, a Legacy is what you leave in them.
— Craig D Lounsbrough
I was listening to a track
by Reggae artist Chronixx, and as always, his music transports me. The song is called
Legend, and amidst the transcendental benefits, it reminded me of the truth behind being a legend and leaving a legacy.
Here are some of the powerful lyrics:
Said I'm a legend
That you never heard of
before
I said I'm a Lion
But you never heard me roar
I'm a hero that nobody celebrates
But if one person remembers my name
That means I made a change
Admittedly he is one of my favourite cultural artist but the lyrics from his recent track
Legend had me meditating on the words and what it meant to me. What will be my Legend? I always think of my father Evelyn Leopold, in times like this. When he died, he left behind a home in Jamaica, some money, his wife, his grown children - namely me and the memories.
When I'm asked by my readers and fans how I became interested in genre fiction and fantastic film, I say my dad.
One of my earliest memories is of me sitting on his lap while he watched a popular supernatural TV series back in the day called Appointment with Fear. My love of books, stories, and film came from him and he's the reason why I wanted to be a writer. In my eyes, he was a legend. Here is a quiet man from a very poor background, a fisherman in a coastal town in Jamaica who taught himself to read and write. He loved his family but when he passed on who would keep his memory alive outside
of his close family. What lifelong vocation did he have that the world could remember him for and even celebrate outside of what I could ever do? The world would never know.
