You know that I'm passionate about what I do but sometimes I get so caught up in creating my legacy, I forget that not everyone knows where I'm coming from or what I'm about.

Why become a writer?

Out of everything I could have done in my life, writing allowed me the opportunity to make a difference in a big and unique way. I'm no good as a follower, and I wouldn't be fulfilled if I wasn't able to express my individuality. I guess because the world is the way it is, I found my purpose.

If not for that disparity and sometimes outright erasing of black people in fantasy and sci-fi I wouldn't have a calling. I'm blessed that in my small way I can contribute. Fantasy, I've been told plays a major role in a healthy mind.  From childhood to adulthood its a natural coping method. So as well as entertaining you, I'm providing a much-needed psychology service - you can thank me later. And I'd like to raise a glass to the system that in many ways tried to repress the beauty of diversity. Who would I be without your duplicitous ways?

My brand Urban Fantastic is an essential part of that push. And although it's not as influential as it will be, its another opportunity to accurately represent the society and world I live in . It's a great feeling when you know how important what you do is. The ability to take your readers away from the reality of there daily lives to a fantastic world of my creation, is a blessing.

My message won't get to everyone but that's not important. What is important is that I'm doing something about it. No complaining about why things aren't the way they should be, not asking for permission, just doing it. 

And that is what it's about.

Picking up a pen every day, is about having a purpose. If you have a purpose you will make an impact.

My purpose through my writing is to create fantastical histories, mythologies, futures, and worlds, in comics, books, games, TV and film where African people are not just invisible or bystanders but play an integral role in the narrative being told.
