Ever since I can remember comics have been an integral part of my life. One of the many benefits of my obsession with these fantastic characters, was how they helped me to interpret the world I lived in. And I saw my Scarcity Mentality, as something that I didn't want released into the world like Bruce Banner and his alter Ego the Hulk. In the early days of the character Dr. Banner was trying to stop the emergence of the
monster inside. I was doing the same thing with that scarcity part of me I called The Poor Me. I was beginning to understand it was a monster just as pervasive as the Incredible Hulk. A monster that after subduing it, I could never release to the light of day again.
Why would I?
It was destroying any hope I had of offering my humble gifts to the world and being fulfilled in the process. Instead I was leading myself to failure, fear and discontent.
What
a waste that would have been.
That's why I had to keep the Scarcity Mentality suppressed at all cost? Author Stephen Covey explains these concepts beautifully in his classic The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. He writes:
Most people are deeply scripted in what I call the Scarcity Mentality. They see life as having only
so much, as though there were only one pie out there. And if someone were to get a big piece of the pie, it would mean less for everybody else.
The thing I learned from Bruce Banner was his constant efforts in keeping his Mr Hyde persona at bay. To prevent the Scarcity monster from hulking out and reducing our lives to mediocrity we have to consistently work to subdue it. Remember I mentioned the one secret to happy living, I've tested and given my stamp of
approval. Bruce Banner would be proud.
