What the Hulk Taught me on Preventing My Scarcity Monster from Busting Out

We've all got Light and Dark Inside us, what matters is the Part we choose to focus on. That's who you really are.

Don't you need to be a success before you can advise others on success?

Well that's what I thought.

I know what you're thinking. We all have different measures of what success means to us, so my yardstick will be different from yours. And you're right, its all about what you perceive it to be. I'm old school so true success for me is that elusive balance between financial independence, healthy living, service and spiritual growth.

I don't have all the answers and couldn't be classed as a guru in any way, shape or form but not because I don't have the strategies and processes to take you from hero to zero like the giants of personal development, I can share my one hard earned nugget of advice.

Keep the monster of a Scarcity Mentality locked away,  because its a liability that could cost you your happiness. Only through Mentors and books did I get past it but it could have gone the other way too.

Bruce Banner busting Out into the Hulk is not always a Good Thing

Ever since I can remember comics have been an integral part of my life. One of the many benefits of my obsession with these fantastic characters, was how they helped me to interpret the world I lived in. And I saw my Scarcity Mentality, as something that I didn't want released into the world like Bruce Banner and his alter Ego the Hulk. In the early days of the character Dr. Banner was trying to stop the emergence of the monster inside. I was doing the same thing with that scarcity part of me I called The Poor Me. I was beginning to understand it was a monster just as pervasive as the Incredible Hulk. A monster that after subduing it,  I could never release to the light of day again.

Why would I?

It was destroying any hope I had of offering my humble gifts to the world and being fulfilled in the process. Instead I was leading myself to failure, fear and discontent.

What a waste that would have been.

That's why I had to keep the Scarcity Mentality suppressed at all cost? Author Stephen Covey explains these concepts beautifully in his classic The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. He writes:

Most people are deeply scripted in what I call the Scarcity Mentality. They see life as having only so much, as though there were only one pie out there. And if someone were to get a big piece of the pie, it would mean less for everybody else.

The thing I learned from Bruce Banner was his constant efforts in keeping his Mr Hyde persona at bay. To prevent the Scarcity monster from hulking out and reducing our lives to mediocrity we have to consistently work to subdue it. Remember I mentioned the one secret to happy living, I've tested and given my stamp of approval. Bruce Banner would be proud.

It's become a feature for me to recommend a book, film or podcast that could prove to be useful  and this classic by Stephen Covey The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People tackles the issue of Scarcity Mentality that I've elaborated on.
