Do More than Exist — Unknown
At about this time every year, I think about what is my purpose on earth. Don't worry I'm not going to get all philosophical. It's just that my Dad died around this time some years ago and it got me thinking about being remembered and what my legacy would be. My father was a soft spoken, taciturn, self-educated, fisherman from Jamaica who loved his family in a quiet, understated way. He had
few friends but a big family back home. I think about him a lot and wonder, how many people remember him outside of myself and my brother. How many people did he impact and could his influence be perpetuated years after his death? Don't get me wrong to be remembered long after your gone isn't a goal everyone would ascribe to but making sure your life has meaning on your own terms is a worthy aspiration. It's a
question we should all ask ourselves especially if we give lip service to being the best we can be but do nothing to accomplish that. I firmly believe we can all leave our mark big or small if we decide to.
The Road to a Wasted Life - You make no improvements to yourself - Year after year, you go with the
flow expecting things to change but won't because you have to make change happen.
- You're an expert at wasting time - at home and work you play with the idea of being productive but give no real value because you're not committed to anything.
- You're miserable - And cannot conjure up being joyful even at the things you say make you happy. You just don't understand that
being happy is a choice you can make.
- You're still sleeping - Most of your life you seem to be under the covers missing out on the many adventures you could be having in the big wide world of wakefulness.
- You're bored - Technology comes to your rescue here and you waste even more time using inane App's, internet browsing and idly chatting on your smartphone for
titillation and easy pleasure. God forbid, you had to spend time with a good book or on your own.
- You're not the life of the party - No one wants to be around a boring person. Hearing about your exploits in your traditional 9 - 5 job, is a sure way to turn them off. Sadly some family and friends will avoid you even if you're successful, imagine if they think your life is sleep inducing. Go out and experience the world. Arm
yourself with life.
- You never try anything new - You stay at home watching TV, surfing the net or playing computer games, making no plans but expecting the excitement to come to you in the comfort of your home. There are events happening everywhere in your town or city but you don't want to try out anything new. You tell yourself you are happy with how you are.
- You stay home
every chance you get - The world is waiting for you outside your home. None of the bests things you experience will happen inside your bedroom.
In Conclusion If whatever you're doing does not improve your life or the life of others, it can't lead to happiness, meaning or purpose. Don't spend your brief time on Planet Earth trolling, complaining or leaving
affirmations on the internet about things that don’t matter to you, trying to impress people you’ve never met and who will never discover the true you and then pretend your life is fully lived. You know its not true Get out there and make shit happen in the world, you'll be remembered for it.
What consistent contribution big or small, can you make for at least one persons outside of your family and friends?
