The Energy Equation
Now, let's talk about your physical energy.
Laziness is often associated with a lack of motivation and energy. You can have all the passion in the world, but if your body's running on fumes, you're fighting an uphill battle.
To have the energy you need to propel you forward, you need to Eat, Sleep and Move.
I've talked about this before, but it's so important.
Eat healthy.
Sleep 8 hours minimum.
Move your body every day - walk, run, skip.
You might be surprised how these small changes can recharge your motivation batteries if consistently applied.
The Momentum
Mindset
Let's build some momentum. Think of your productivity like a spaceship. Getting off the ground requires a massive amount of energy, but once you break through the atmosphere, you're cruising.
The trick is to start small—really small—laughably small. Want to write a novel? Start with a sentence a day. Want to run a marathon? Begin with a 5-minute walk. The goal
isn't the activity itself; it's building the habit of showing up.
Here's a secret from the world of speculative fiction: in many of my stories, characters don't start as heroes. They become heroes through small, consistent actions that build over time. You're the protagonist of your own story – what small action can you take today to start your hero's journey?
Systems Over
Willpower
Now, let's talk about the unsexy but crucial part of turning mediocrity into momentum: systems. Willpower is like a muscle – it fatigues with overuse. But systems? They're the autopilot that keeps you moving forward even when motivation wanes.
In my writing life, I have a system: I write every day, no matter what. Simple, right? I said it's not sexy, and I
mean it. Some days, the words flow like a river. On other days, writing a single coherent sentence is a struggle. But the system ensures I show up, and showing up is half the battle.
What system can you create to support your goals? Maybe it's laying out your gym clothes the night before, or blocking social media sites during your productive hours. The key is to make it easy to do the right thing and hard to fall back into old
patterns.
The Passion Paradox
Sometimes, passion doesn't precede action – it follows it. We often think we need to feel passionate to act, but in reality, action can spark passion.
Remember, in speculative fiction, characters often stumble into their calling. They don't wait for motivation to strike – they act, and in acting,
they discover their purpose.
So, if you're feeling stuck, don't wait for inspiration. Go out into the world and get busy. Take action, any action, related to your goals and watch your lacklustre 'lazy' self come to life.
Your Mission, Should You Choose to Accept It
This week, I challenge you to reframe your relationship with
"laziness." Instead of berating yourself, get curious. When you feel resistance, ask yourself: What's this feeling trying to tell me? What small action can I take right now? What system can I put in place to make progress easier?
Remember, you're not lazy – you're a complex, dynamic being with untapped potential. Your journey from mediocre to momentum starts with a single step. So, what's it going to be?
