I’ve come to understand that the most compelling story I will ever write is the one I tell myself about who I am and who I can become. Whether you’re an aspiring artist, a hustling entrepreneur, or a soul striving to live your truth more fully, you are your story. We all move through this existence with subconscious stories playing on a loop in our minds, narratives that shape how we perceive ourselves and what we’re capable of achieving. Far too often, those internalized tales are ones of limitation, scarcity, and doubt, authored by external voices that want to constrain our potential.

Maybe you’re a rapper or singer who second-guesses sharing your art because the “not being good enough” narrative is hardwired. Or an entrepreneur sabotaging your big dreams because you’ve committed the “I’m just not meant to be successful” story to heart. You could also be a student or parent operating under the toxic myth that you’re fundamentally unworthy of unconditional love and that you don’t belong.

Think of "It was a pleasure to burn." - Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury or "The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel." - Neuromancer by William Gibson. Now, it's your turn to captivate us with your opening sentence!

Challenge Details: Craft a single, unforgettable first line for a speculative fiction story. Your line could open the gates to a dystopian future, a clash among starships, the discovery of a parallel world, or any imaginative scenario you can dream up!

How to Participate:

Include a Title: Give your prospective story a title that complements your first line (titles are not judged but add to the fun and creativity).

Impact: Does the line make us want to read more?
Originality: How unique and creative is the line?
Tone and Atmosphere: Does the line set a clear tone or evoke a specific atmosphere right away?

They become the subconscious operating system running your reality, reinforcing the same cycles of underachievement and lack that breed only more of the same. But here’s the paradigm shift - those narratives you’ve absorbed and embodied? They’re just stories, fictions inherited from sources lacking perspective on your sovereign birthright as a divine creative force. And in each passing moment, you have the power to rewrite the script from that place of unshakable worth and possibility.

It took me a degree of maturity to understand what that meant. What I realized was that the stories I told myself about myself framed how I appeared in the world. If I wasn’t telling myself stories about my novels’ uniqueness, do you think I’d strive to make them unique? I don’t think I would.

Just like we writers can create a new internal shift in our protagonists, you too have the agency to become the author, redefining your heroic journey, upending the old undermining plots and being brave enough to step into your new mythology.

So, what will your epic saga be? What narratives of courage, resilience, playful creativity and radical self-acceptance will you use to replace the dusty old restrictive tales still echoing in your mind? You are now the big-hearted go-getter claiming their grand vision, you are the person of unique talents and perspectives finally authoring their own quirky, non-conformist origin story, or your spiritually-curious seeker getting wildly metaphysical and dreaming up a new pantheon of beliefs upgrading their soul’s singular cosmic projection.

Whatever that liberating re-storying is for you, lean all the way into it with heart, intellect and every fibre of your being. Make that new autobiographical myth the foundational reality you wake up and breathe life into each day through your thoughts, words, and actions. Reinforce it with a new roster of supportive beliefs affirming your indelible greatness and the generative magic you were born to unleash.

And as you dwell more and more in that refashioned heroic identity, something profound will begin taking hold. The external world will start reorganizing itself in alignment, opportunities and synchronicities mirroring back the person you’ve wholeheartedly committed to authoring yourself as. That loop of underachievement and scarcity thinking will be overwritten once and for all by an operating system of prosperity consciousness that simply won’t accept anything less than the epic you’ve decided to birth into form.

Because here’s the real key lesson, Gentle Reader - you are innately the writer, director, producer, and star of the most important narrative undertaking there is: the story of your life. The old tales and narratives handed down by others never held truth at their core because they originated from external sources lacking the context of who you truly are. But from this day forward, you can choose to lay claim to the pen that’s been yours to wield all along. You can lovingly tear out the pages of old disempowering beliefs and begin inscribing new sentences rooted in the highest version of you.

So start writing.

Rewrite the old stories that have dulled your shine, and watch as the whole universe bends its ear to listen intently to the new epic you’ve decided to breathe into form. As I continue to pen tales of speculative fiction, the most transformative story remains the one I tell myself every day. It’s a story of endless potential, driven by a narrative of resilience and creativity. By rewriting this internal script, we do more than change our lives; we redefine the very parameters of our reality.
