I’m not sure if it’s a good thing or not, but by December, I start asking myself if my actions are making a difference. Usually, throughout the year, I’m executing my plans, but as the year winds down, that question comes to the forefront of my mind. I know I’m ticking off items on my To-Do list, but am I really moving the needle? How do we know if we’re levelling up or merely going through the motions? My work explores the infinite realms of possibility and potential through fiction. I’m a knowledge seeker because of the genre I’m a part of, so I sometimes come into contact with ideas that prove useful or useless. That’s how I discovered a simple yet profound metric for measuring personal growth.

Things get harder before you level up.

“If I adhere to my current habits, rituals, and routines for the next year, will I evolve into a superior or inferior version of myself?”

And no, I didn’t develop the framework for that question myself. The initial idea came from a brilliant question asked by the philosopher Alain de Botton.
“Anyone who isn’t embarrassed by who they were last year probably isn’t learning enough.”
