As a writer, I often tease apart these complexities, spinning yarns from the lives of both the saints and the sinners. The human soul’s capacity for uncertainty makes us so fascinating. There’s no denying that history has handed us a slew of fascinating characters - the brilliant, the mad, the evil, the innovative - with views that are as marvellous as they are bizarre and dangerous.

The crazy ideas that appear in my writing aren’t just mine. They echo the voices and views of many. This is why exposing myself to ideas of the famous and infamous, the powerful and pitiful, holds such importance. Friedrich Nietzsche is one such individual whose teachings interested me.

So, why Nietzsche? Frankly, his philosophy, notably the idea of the Übermensch or “Superman,” felt like this German philosopher, essayist, cultural critic, poet, and composer had some bold ideas for his time. He was all about human potential and challenging the norms of society. I shouldn't have to say this, but he wasn't perfect. None of these great men and women are. We should be concerned with the contribution they make to humankind, good or bad, and how we can use it to make our positive contribution.

His ideas on human potential hit home for me. We writers often dream up worlds in which our heroes are physically capable. For Nietzsche, strength wasn’t just physical. His teachings called for mental and emotional toughness. He wanted us all to have the bravery to draft and live by our own rules.

Nietzsche’s writings call for nothing short of a revolution. He teaches us to go against the flow, question, and take the road less travelled. This essence finds its way into my writings, urging readers not just to live life but to take charge and shape it.

You can easily see how that applies to us. It all begins by accepting change with open arms. One of my Jamaican mom's favourite sayings was, “What doesn’t kill me makes me stronger.” Little did I know she was quoting Nietzsche. It’s not about seeking out hardship but finding maturity and strength in adversity. Life will rough us up, and in those moments lie hidden chances to rise, learn, and evolve.

Another of Nietzsche’s was the ‘will to power’. Misinterpreted often, it’s not about controlling others. For me, it’s all about mastering oneself, fighting past hurdles, reaching our goals, and living with purpose.

Nietzsche also despised stagnation. The crux of his philosophy is the constant urge to question, solve mysteries, and keep learning. As I see it, it aligns perfectly with my line of work, where asking the nitty-gritty of existence and presenting it in an entertaining way is our bread and butter.

Something else Nietzsche said that stuck with me is that we are the best judge of our values. Doesn't this feel refreshing in a world full of puppeteers and fakers? This gem from Nietzsche always rekindles hope within me - hope that the readers can be the forerunners, innovators, and architects of their paths.

What is impressive to me is no matter how far back you go in history, we have struggled with these questions. And like many others, it's taught me to break free, to be resilient, and to constantly evolve. It showed me that being stuck in societal norms is a choice one makes, a choice to not be extraordinary.

I hope through my tales, you realize there is a Superman dormant within each of us. To tell them that greatness is but a step away, that any ceiling is but an illusion, and that they, too, can pilot their incredible journey. Nietzsche’s Superman isn’t a myth; it's us, free from our imagined limitations, reaching out for the stars.

His philosophy challenges us to reflect, embrace our individuality, and give us the hunger to reach the top. That resonate with me and the worlds I create, where anything is possible in a world striving for excellence. Shakespeare said, all the world’s a stage. I’d add to that and say all the actors are potential Supermen!
Just imagine what a world like that could be.
