Christmas is one of my favourite times of the year. Growing up with my parents - Jamaican immigrants, Christmas was a big deal. If you were a child living in my household you could feel the magic of the period. The food, the toys and the family made for some of my life’s best memories, but something else was wrapped up in presents and left under the tree.

I’ve realised that Christmas’s allure isn’t in its shimmering lights or the resonant carols that fill the air but in the boundless potential it represents. Even for those who don’t celebrate this holiday, there’s no denying the palpable sense of hope and generosity that envelops the world during this festive season. It’s a time when the ordinary becomes extraordinary, and the impossible seems tantalisingly within reach.There was always something under the Christmas tree that stretched my imagination. Some toy or book that allowed me to step out of my comfort zone.

My parents intuitively knew my inquiring mind required that kind of stimulus, and around Christmas was one of the best times to do it. I did the same thing with my kids when they were growing up and I’m glad I did.

In my books I love the idea that our differences, much like the varied traditions of Christmas, aren’t just to be tolerated but celebrated. They enrich our collective experience and expand our understanding of what it means to be a part of the human race.
