That principle applies not just to writing but to life itself. Most people have big dreams they would love to achieve - an advanced degree, a successful business, a non-profit serving their community, a work of art or athletic achievement making a mark on the world. But only a tiny fraction put in
the hard work needed to realize those dreams. Walk into any bookstore, and you'll see thousands of how-to guides and self-help manuals overflowing with advice. But ultimately, information alone is not enough. Someone much more intelligent than me said this, and I agree wholeheartedly.
The hopes, dreams, goals and good intentions that don't translate into purposeful action is the greatest plague
of mankind.
I'm not saying that you shouldn't consider the steps you take. But once you have all you need, then execution is the next step. No further consideration is necessary. You will learn from your actions, taking steps to adjust or pivot according to your results.
As a writer, I've spent decades honing my craft through long
hours of practice, failure, learning, and trying again. My dreams of being the best writer I can require me to push past rejection letters, writer's block, imposter syndrome, and all the demons lurking within. But with relentless dedication and perseverance, I transformed my imagination into manuscripts worthy of your time, Gentle Reader. Now, when you immerse yourself in one of my books, you hold in your hands the product of years of vision combined with vigilant, unyielding
execution.
That same drive is necessary, no matter your field. Scientists must rigorously test hypotheses in the laboratory before publishing theories. Elite athletes relentlessly drill proper technique long before competing for gold medals on the global stage. Master craftspeople apprentice for thousands of hours, slowly accumulating the skills needed to create singular works of artistry. Successful entrepreneurs doggedly
refine and iterate their products or services, building sustainable businesses from initial sparks of inspiration.
It ain't easy, Gentle Readers, but it's the only way I know to accomplish that genuinely magical life you talk about. You must face your fears, step outside your comfort zone and execute.
Does it guarantee traditional
success?
Hell no!
All it promises is that you'll be further along the path than if you did nothing. At its core, execution comes down to the grit, determination, and work ethic to see your ambitions through. It means embracing failures and disappointments as opportunities for growth rather than excuses for abandoning hope. Each day
offers another chance to inch closer to your goals through whatever small actions you can take to progress. Over weeks, months and years, those daily choices compound - ultimately bridging the gap between present reality and future achievement. It's not always glamorous or momentous. More often, it's mundane, gradual, even dull. But dreams without follow-through are wishful thinking.
Brute force
won't do either. I tried that, and it didn't work.
Execution must be guided by continual learning and adaptation to what you see in front of you. As the landscape changes, adapt. As an author, I've learned that no plan survives contact with reality. Effective execution demands flexibility, not just perseverance.
The great thing about
execution is that it's rather binary in nature. You either have results, or you don't. In speculative fiction, the transition from a concept to a published book is a testament to execution's tangible nature. Executed dreams result in new businesses, personal achievements, and fulfilled ambitions. The tangibility of execution is its most rewarding aspect.
So dream boldly...then roll up your sleeves
and get to work. Execution is the ultimate competitive edge. The bridge between the life you're living now and the one you're capable of living. Glory awaits those who travel the long road from ideas to fruition. The journey won't be easy, but I promise the rewards are worth it.
Be Your Own Hero.
