Picture your life like a blank canvas. Your attention is your paintbrush. When we elect what to give importance to, we pick out the details we want to bring to life, creating our world just like the grand masters did on canvas, ceiling or stone.
Social media can make
you feel like everything is full-on and requires your attention immediately. But they are trying to train you to act on impulse and reflex. Slow down. You need to tackle life with a game plan. Don’t let anyone dictate to you where your attention should be. Learn to watch your thoughts and feelings without getting lost in them. This level of control puts us in the driving seat, letting us avoid knee-jerk reactions towards more mindful choices.
In many of my books, my heroes’ thoughts and intentions can steer the entire tale. They may not get what they want, but it’s a goal to achieve. A direction to head. What we fix our attention on can end up shaping our life’s narrative. It helps the process if we stay positive when we set out on that journey.
It’s easy to manipulate time in a novel, but living and breathing in the NOW can be challenging for us. When
our thoughts and actions are synced through consistent attention, we can create a domino effect that breathes life into our wildest dreams.
Our lives aren’t isolated vignettes but interconnected stories like a good novel. Our thoughts and where we focus our attention build our world. To me, that’s magical. As a speculative fiction writer, editing makes your work sing, and in life, editing who and what you are will result in the same
thing - a better story.
In the long run, whether you’re buried in a captivating novel or just living your life, mastering your attention holds the power to bring your full potential into play. There is something about putting your whole heart into a task that makes the universe want to support your efforts. But it must be yours. Your choice alone because If you don’t make a choice, society will choose for you.
And that Gentle Reader
is not what you want.
