Just a step beyond Mediocrity and the philosophy of just
getting by, settling for less, and living smaller than you could be living.
Just a step.
All around you are people who work hard at the wrong things, who are lazy, unambitious, close-minded, consumers, hoping for a better life but doing nothing about it.
As I continue on my writing journey, I appreciate the simplicity of taking that extra step. There is a boundary between average and extraordinary. Your job is to find it and step into it.
So you don’t need to be the best in the world; you don’t need to be super talented or brilliant to stay a step above the competition and reap the massive rewards that come from being better than average. You need skills that the marketplace values — things people will pay you for
— and always be a learner. Invest in yourself. Because through investment in yourself, you not only know that you need to take the extra step but what step to take.
You will feel alone sometimes as you take this journey because, as always with meaningful endeavours, only a few will bother to embark on it, but the rewards at the top of the mountain and the rewards of the journey make it all worth it.
I came across a simple but effective means of never being average in a short article by writer Todd Brison that perfectly sums up the ideas we’ve been discussing.
- Do something to the best of your ability.
- Then do a little bit more.
Be your own hero.
