Wired co-founder Kevin Kelly came up with the concept of 1000 true fans, stating that by finding 1000 people who value your uniqueness, you can carve out a meaningful career. I’ve talked about this before, and I’ll keep referring back to it
because the concept is so simple yet powerful.
Being able to bring all the elements together so you can be considered a Category of One Writer is no mean feat. But what did I expect if I wanted to achieve something of value? It’s going to be hard, and years later I’m still working on changing the perception of the marketplace through my stories.
As I said, tough.
So what about you, Gentle Reader? What area of your life could make you a Category One person?
Remember this:
You have the potential to be a Category of One person because there is no one, NO ONE, like you! And if you would finally own that, really OWN IT, you’d be driven to carry that uniqueness into some other aspect of your life.
How?
You choose.
What makes you unique? We all have at least a superficial grasp of what makes us special. Category One thinking requires you to pin down what that really means. You need to sit down with yourself and give that question your undivided attention. That thing you have discounted, discarded, ignored or feared may well be what differentiates you from eight billion people on earth in a meaningful way.
You can’t make a dent in the world by being someone else. You must find that spark that only you can light and use it to ignite your world.
Ignite your book world.
Ignite your work world.
Ignite your business world.
Ignite your family or community
world.
Don’t watch what others are doing.
Show up and do you.
Many people are just bouncing around society, not knowing they can make a difference.
From birth to death, they end up unchanged. All they’ve done is be someone else, blend in, leave no mark and be forgettable.
Discover what your thing is and what makes you a Category One person.
Make that Dent.
Do it now.
What are you waiting for?
Be your own hero.
