Experience taught me I was looking at the wrong things.
The principles of success arenāt complex; itās how you execute them that is frustratingly confusing. When I started writing, so many talented black authors had their work published through a new publishing house that had on the scene. I would have imagined they would use this opportunity as the beginning of a long and productive career, but instead, not long after, they gave up. Boredom and frustration made them convince themselves that this was a waste of time that would lead nowhere and they
might as well try something else.
Ā
What I would have loved to have told them would be never to give up. I would have liked to have said they had to master
boredom because it was the only way forward.
The key was to embrace the boredom and show up anyway. Expect it and still do the damn thing.
Ā
If youāve been following me for a while now, you know Iāve got a thing about passion. But passion is just a spark. It allows you to begin your journey, but itās not enough on its own. And that is something you will learn,
especially if you have a project that takes some time to complete. Passion can depart from you in the middle of your journey; itās just the reality of your endeavour. To prevent yourself from giving up on your dream, youāve got to remember your purpose.
Ā
When I ran into the politics and short-sightedness of being a published author, I felt disheartened and discouraged. I took a leap of faith and struck out on my own. I look back on that time, where Iām coming from, and I push through the moments of boredom and embrace the monotonous work required. Because I know incredible things are possible.
Ā
As I write this, boredom is kicking my ass, and it could be doing the same thing to you. Iāve been doing this for a while now, so Iām a dab hand at hanging in
there.
Ā
This is my method.
I sink myself in my process of reading and writing, writing and reading, one foot in front of the other, over and over again. Iāve fallen in love with the process because Iāve consciously looked out for those little things that I enjoy, smallās things that I begin to love because I know Iām getting better. This way of thinking will help you push through those long, arduous and
tedious days.
Ā
We must learn to embrace this
boredom.Ā
Life will ask you the question - How much does this mean to you? And if you answer, it means the world; then you know your purpose. And if you know your purpose, you will fall in love with the process, allowing you to push through these
boring moments. If you can embrace being unremarkable now to being remarkable later, then you will be able to truly enjoy the fun, exciting, and successful life you create.
Ā
Be your own hero.
