Being a writer, you must learn to handle boredom. I will be the first to admit that writing is boring, but there lies the power and the contradiction. I practice being bored every day because I write every day and that's where I get my best ideas. When your mind is excited from creativity and the power of your ideas, it makes you feel compelled to create but instead of going out and writing, painting, singing or dancing, you remain in that creative free space between idea and action.
That sweet spot, I call boredom.

Wait for it...After Boredom Comes Great Creativity.

You’re going about your business, but you’re not acting on your inspiration; you’re on pause, moving through the world in that space of doing nothing towards your goals but being present.

Boredom isn’t just a reluctance to be unoccupied; it allows your brain the freedom to relax.
And a relaxed brain can produce at a high rate.
A relaxed brain has the freedom to create.
The freedom to find solutions.
The freedom to discover and invent.

In a modern world of constant connectivity, the simple experience of doing nothing is a life hack that has gone unrecognised. The ability to remain in that space of inactivity will improve our creativity and problem-solving skills.

You need to fit boredom into your life. Create a bubble of non-activity in your schedule. Chunks of time are dedicated not to busyness or activity but to simply allow yourself to be unoccupied.

So what does boredom look like for you?
For me, it’s washing the dishes, tidying the house, long walks when I’ve work to do, runs I wish were shorter, reading a book that will not get to the point, or watching a bad movie with plot holes you could fall through. I practice being bored all the time but still not nearly enough.

When you are in that free space I call boredom, your mind opens up to take in more data. The magical thing is all this is happening below your level of consciousness. You will be absorbing more data that allows you to listen more keenly and notice detail that would otherwise drift by you. Creativity arises naturally as a result.

Being in that free space between idea and action for extended periods of time multiplies the power of the action taken when you emerge from boredom and pull the trigger. It’s analogous to a hydro generator. The more water it stores in its reservoir from the river, the more power it will produce when it flows through the generator.

So your production intensity will be directly proportional to how much you have allowed yourself to be unoccupied and let your brain have the freedom to wander, explore, combine new thoughts, and generate new ideas.

Can I challenge you Gentle Reader to revel in a bit of boredom today. Eat a meal without distraction. Drink water instead of wine. Go for a walk with your smartphone on Airplane Mode. Sit on a park bench for a few minutes and observe whatever is happening around you. Keep the boredom going by not checking your phone, reading an article, or researching that new idea. This is the time for your brain to relax into that space of freedom to invent, explore, create, generate new ideas, and solve problems. Trust in it and let it do its thing; this is where it does its best work.
