Mr Richards, my Social Studies teacher in Jamaica, was no prognosticator; he didn’t have any prophetic powers - he was actually a bit of a dick, but one thing he did understand was that your actions today would dictate your results later. He saw something in my classmate’s behaviour, attitude and habits that would invariably lead him to a sticky conclusion.
He wasn’t wrong either; my classmate was in and out of prison because of his habits. Not because it was predestined but because his daily actions dictated who he became.

If you tell me what you did today, I will tell you what kind of life you will have. Predestination maybe how the universe works - who knows. All I can say is I choose to believe you have a greater degree of control over where your life goes than most may think. This isn’t just anecdotal evidence. I can see it working in my life everyday.

I can tell with a good degree of accuracy where you’ll be in the future. I can’t promise I’ll know whether you’ll achieve all the goals you have set for yourself - I believe the results you get in life are a mixture of consistent hard work, planning, discipline and good luck. What I can categorically say is you will be unrecognisable from who you were. You’ll be achieving goals you never imagined you could, catapulting yourself to higher levels. What you do daily - your consistent actions, are the building blocks of your future life. I know where you’ll be because your words are telling me. I know what you’ll become because you will ultimately become what you are. Your life will reflect precisely what’s happening in your head. It’s the way.

This is good news for anyone who feels powerless against the forces of so-called fate. Plotting the course of your future results can only be done by your actions in the moment. People tell us all the time who they will become and where they will end up by the actions they take. It’s just that we choose to ignore what they tell us. My classmate told all of us who wanted to listen how he intended his future self to be.
When you realise the power you have at your disposal, you feel surprisingly liberated. An audiobook you listen to today can impact your life forever. You could begin a coding practice this weekend, and three years hence, you could be packing in your full-time job for your passion project. If you start to learn a language this minute in a few short years, you could be competent in another tongue. These tiny seeds of effort you plant will be the garden that grows tomorrow.

Who you turn out to be is not a random occurrence. There are points in your journey and decision points that you must make to change the course of your life. Everything changed when I discovered that I should focus on the daily process rather than the results. I am committed to writing and promoting my brand for as long as I breathe. I’ve now come to realise that everything you do — consciously and unconsciously — is creating your life. If you want a different future, create a different day.
