Trust me, I know it’s not easy. As Brian Tracy said, you eat that frog first at the beginning of your day. Meaning you do the difficult things, the important things first. We tend to want to tackle what is easy, but we need to know what our most important daily steps are and complete them first.
“The way to get the most out of your work and your life is to go as small as possible. Most people think just the opposite. They think big success is time-consuming and complicated. As a result, their calendars and to-do lists become overloaded and overwhelming.” -Gary Keller.
One of my all-time favourite business books is The One Thing by Gary Keller.
If you want to create a more fulfilling workday for yourself, Keller explains, you should harness your energy to create first and manage second. In other words, switch things around. Keller puts it simply—
“To experience extraordinary results, be a maker in the morning and a manager in the afternoon.”
This doesn’t necessarily mean you have to wake up at 5 a.m. to be creative - it just means that you need to recognise what works best for you. Simply prioritise creating before doing all the other stuff.
I’ve found that progress is not as straightforward as it seems, and throughout my life, I’ve mixed up busyness with progression. It seems evident that we should know if we’re heading toward our dreams, but we humans are good at self-delusion. It takes concentrated effort to make sure you’re focusing on moving forward each day, week, month, and year. You need to be
confident you’re making progress, no matter how small the steps. Because not every task is equal in the amount of reward it will provide for your life. So choose wisely.
Let’s not overcomplicate things. Success comes from focusing on ONE thing, not many things. Learn how to cut through the clutter and do your best to move the needle in your favour.
Our energy is finite so let’s not waste it.
Let’s do one thing at a time.
