Give me an undertaking I’m passionate about every time over whiling away my evenings on the sand. For me, that would be torture; I’d be tired after being forced to do nothing.
Sadly, most people don’t realize that it’s actually more exhausting to be lazy than being disciplined. The more disciplined you are, the more energy you’ll have, which allows you to have a better, more fulfilling life.
Â
How many successful creative people have you heard of who have retired young or retired early, and after just a few weeks playing golf or relaxing, they decided to get back into the thick of things. They ask themselves what else are they going to do with their life?Â
Â
I know people who are planning to retire and are so excited about the prospect. When you ask them what they plan to do, they don’t know. Puttering around the garden and the house seems to be the consensus. That kind of laziness is a recipe for an early grave. Mankind wasn’t created to just put up our feet.
Â
I’m not advocating never resting. You need to recharge your energy because it contributes to your overall sense of satisfaction and well-being. What I am saying is if you make doing nothing a goal for your life, you’re missing the bigger picture.
Â
If you want to stop surviving life and start enjoying it, you need discipline and structure. The best life is only possible through a passion you love, not laziness and working as little as possible, hoping to retire. If you live your life solely to relax as much as possible, you might end up living a dismal life without even knowing it.Â
Now that's scary.
Â
It’s not about working as little as possible. It’s about creating a life full of meaning that allows you to rest, knowing you’ve worked hard to make the world a better place in a big or small way. As you restore yourself regularly, recharging those batteries around the people or places that empower you, you'll be eager to get back to making a difference for your viewers, reader and subscribers.
Â
That’s what it should be about. And that’s what I call living.
